Chapter Five
He looked at the photo of her he'd downloaded from the internet and then burned to disc and printed.
She was beautiful, perfect. And the slight frown she'd given the flowers as she'd walked out of the flower shop showed him she liked them. He knew she wasn't scared. But he did see the confusion. Confusion ....
Now why would she be confused? It wasn't the fact she kept reading the card. No, it was the way she'd looked at the flowers, as if she expected them to be from someone else. He wondered whom she'd expected to send her flowers.
A boyfriend?
A girlfriend?
He thought about it for a moment. A woman who wasn't into men? There was a novelty for him. He'd always gone for the taken, married types.
She was just too damn pretty for him to pass up.
And if a woman missed her, that was fine too. He'd still be taking her away from someone.
He'd bet, though, it was a man she expected to send her flowers.
He already knew, thanks to the gossip at the local flower shop. Miss Meredith Fox was hung up on some cop in San Antonio who would have nothing to do with her.
There was a thrill, an unknown thrill that he was taking something so close to those that were undoubtedly hunting him. He wondered what was happening with the investigation, not that the cops had ever linked all the pieces together. There were many cops, many towns, many bodies. But no one, well, there had been that one back years ago in North Carolina who had started to piece things together. That man had to have a little accident on the roadway. Done. Nothing else to worry about.
Now?
Now he had a new one, a new pretty to play with. But if she was close to a cop, or even if the man was an ex, she might alert him to more strange gifts, strange emails, strange happenings. He'd have to be careful. Watch her from a distance as he did most of his pretties, but with this one, there would be no playing, toying, or teasing.
He figured that would probably take some of the fun out of it. He'd have to find a way to watch her. He knew where she lived, out in the middle of fucking nowhere. At least if the time came, he could get her alone. But there were also her mother and sister or something the gossipy chick had told him.
He sighed and put the photo back. He'd head back to Fredericksburg tomorrow and see what the prospects were.

"You're not wearing that, are you?" Dawn asked from the doorway.
Meredith looked down at the long, fitted sundress in baby blue. "What's the matter with what I have on?"
Dawn swore. "You want to get laid. That is not a get-laid dress. That is a let's-talk-and-feel-all-lovey dress."
Meredith shook her head. "He's here because he's worried, not because he wants to get laid."
Dawn raised a brow, her expression clearly stating her skepticism.
